Hi, I'm Denise Druce, a fitness instructor in Salt Lake City, Utah. Let's talk about ways to estimate RMR which means resting metabolic rate. This is the rate that our body burns calories when we are resting. So there's a complicated equation that allows you to figure out what your RMR is and there are plenty of RMR calculators online. If you just search for that you can find one of those but let's talk about a simple way to estimate this number today. So if you take your body weight and multiply your body weight by 12 or 13, you'll get a good number that tells you how many calories you want to consume if you'd like to lose weight. If you are more interested in maintaining weight, a simple formula is body weight x 15 or 16. So either of these numbers is going to give you a good idea of what you want to consume if you want to either maintain or lose weight. It's a great idea to check with your physician or check with a nutritionist if you are going to drastically change your diet. But otherwise, get an estimate and begin eating good clean foods and don't forget to add in the exercise. For more tips on fitness or nutrition, please check out my website.
