My name is Sandra Blackie, and I'm often asked if flies are a necessary chest exercise. In my opinion, they aren't. However let me show you how to do them properly. A chest fly is an exercise that's been around since the beginning of strength training. One thing that we've realized with education and time is that extending the elbows so that the moment is wide is not necessary for the chest muscles to develop. It actually increases a little bit of stress to the shoulder joint and the front part of the deltoid. So a modified version if you'll notice it's bending the elbows. The palms are still facing each other but the movement is a little closer to the body in the stretched position which is the bottom. A lot more gentle on the shoulder joint. Just as effective. So the chest fly is something that you can include into your own personal workout. However presses are usually more recommended.
