Hi, my name is Susan Combs, and I'm an insurance broker for Combs and Company. Today, we're talking about when does COBRA insurance end. This is something that you all need to be aware of if you are utilizing your COBRA coverage. Most states what standard is 18 months. Some states will actually go up to 36 months and there are special instances where it will be extended. For example if you are a dependent child that is aged out, then you get the additional 18 months. If you are a divorced individual, then you get the additional 18 months. If you are on COBRA and you become disabled, you get an additional 18 months but the key thing on this is the insurance carrier can raise the rates to 150% of the premium because with COBRA, the prices are 100% of whatever the coverage was the employer was paying. So it's 100% plus a 2% admin fee, but if you become disabled the insurance company does have the right to raise you up. So the really important thing to remember on COBRA coverage is you have 60 days to elect it from the last day of coverage. So if you think you're going to be needing your health insurance and you want to utilize it, you need to make sure that you apply for it within the 60 days. So, I encourage you to talk to your former HR manager and they will be the ones that will provide the most information for you and will guide you through this process.
