How to Get Your Kid Interested in Music

Hi, I'm David Simonsen. I'm a Seattle based relationship expert and a lot of times I work with parents who have their kids in lots of different activities. Karate, music, sports, ballet, and I think a lot of parents do this because they want to expose their children to all sorts of different things and they're hoping one will fall out of the mix. Like oh maybe my kid will be this virtuoso or maybe they'll be an amazing sports player so they put all these things on their kid. So what I suggest to a parent is that you don't do that because it can get really overwhelming to you has a parent driving kids everywhere and definitely overwhelming to the kid. Someone told me once that they thought that music should be just not a class should be a life experience. And I think I agree with that. I think that if you want your kid to be interested in music, don't force them to go to a class. Have music around your house. Have guitars in your house, have musical instruments in your house. Have different kinds of music playing. I think that's a great way to expose your kid in the friendly environment of your home rather than sending them potentially to a cold environment where there's a teacher who doesn't know their teaching style and so then they get a bad experience with music. So as the parent I think it's important for you to be the one that encourages the musical development, the musical interest and once they have that interest, then you can explore out other areas. OK is there a professional I want to start sending this child to to get lessons because maybe you don't know how to play the lyre. I don't know how to play the lyre. And so find an expert lyre player and then go from there. But ultimately, I think you as the parent can encourage your child to enjoy music and then your child will let you know if they're interested or not. I'm David with Health for Life.
