Caring for & Trimming of Purple Sage

Hi, my name's Angela Price and I'm the owner of Eden Condensed Small Space Garden Design. Today I'm going to talk to you about how to care for and trim purple sage. There are a lot of different varieties of sage and one of my favorite is purple sage. And the reason it's called purple sage is that the stems, and sometimes the leaves, actually get a really nice kind of dusty purple tinge to them. It does smell like traditional sage and you can use it any way that you would use sage. But sometimes it does tend to get a little bit woody and it dries out from underneath, even in a small variety like this. The best thing to do is take some herb scissors, or herb snip, or if you have a bigger herb in a pot you can also use trimming shears like this and bypass pruners. And just kind of snip some of the dead leaves off of it, and that will encourage new growth. If they're pretty dry you can just kind of pull them out here and discard them. The other thing you want to do with sage is you want to make sure that you're not giving it too much water. Overwatering it will tend to get the leaves really yellow and droopy. So you'll want to put your, I'll take my glove off here, you want to put your finger in it. If it feels moist leave it alone. One of the easiest ways to kill a plant is to give it too much water. If it feels dry and inch or so down, that's when you know how to water it. Purple sage is also great in that it can be grown in either full sun or part sun. So it's really versatile.
