Hi, I'm Dr. Matheson Harris, an ophthalmologist and ocular facial and plastic surgeon in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dark circles appear under the eyes for many reasons and I see a lot of patients who are wondering about remedies for this. Dark circles appear around the eyes for many reasons including genetics, thinning of the skin, smoking, lack of sleep, allergies and sinus problems. There are many remedies out there but some work better than others. First, get plenty of sleep and try elevating your head at night. Also avoid salty foods and smoking and try to reduce alcohol and caffeine intake. All of these things can reduce the amount of swelling around the face and reduce water retention. Apply cold compresses to your eyes in the morning to reduce swelling that has accumulated overnight. Some people apply sliced cucumbers or even sliced potatoes to the eyes believing that this has some sort of beneficial effect although this hasn't been proven. Applying cold black teabags to the eyes has been shown to reduce the appearance of dark circles. The tannins in the tea are believed to be the chemical responsible for this. Place the tea bags on the eyelids for at least five minutes and you can separate them with a small towel to avoid staining of the skin around the eyelids from the tea. If allergies are a problem, try taking a daily allergy medicine such as Zyrtec, Allegra or Claritin. If sinus problems afflict you, try seeing an otolaryngologist or ENT. If the dark circles under your eyes are due to herniated fat from the eye socket which causes a bag beneath the eye, you're most likely going to need some sort of eyelid surgery procedure. An ocular plastic surgeon can give you advice on the best procedure and what kind of outcomes you can expect. There are also certain new laser procedures which are effective for this. If you have any other questions about facial rejuvenation, see an ocular plastic surgeon in your area.
