Hi, I'm Dr. Matheson Harris, an oculoplastic surgeon and opthomologist in Salt Lake City. Many of my patients have difficulty wearing eye makeup due to sensitivities. Following a few simple tips can make this a lot easier. First try to choose a hypoallergenic brand of eye makeup. The brands Clinique and Almay both make eye makeup specific for the eyes. There are several other brands as well. When choosing an eye shadow, choose a cream rather than a powder. Powders tend to get in the eyes easier and cause more irritation. Water based creams are less irritating than oil based creams when they do get in the eyes. Never apply eyeliner between your eye lashes and eyes. Always apply it above the eye lashes on the upper eye lid and below the eye lashes on the lower lid. Remove your makeup each night and never keep makeup longer than three months. After three months it's generally contaminated with bacteria. And you never want to share makeup with friends or family. Contact lenses wearers should be especially careful with eye makeup. They should apply their contact lenses before putting on the eye makeup and remove them before removing the eye makeup. If you have any questions about eye makeup and eye health, get in contact with an opthamologist in your area.
