This is Melissa Morley with All Seasons Insurance, and today we're talking about how to lower insurance rates if you have a teenage boy. Having a teenager on your policy can be sticker shock, especially if the first driver that you have is a boy. Traditionally in the insurance industry, boys have had a lead foot, which lends towards a higher loss ratio. So when insurance companies go to insure young men, they have charged a surcharge for that. Nowadays, thanks to cell phones and the fact that girls are texting and taking left turns in front of oncoming traffic, unfortunately girls rates have also crept up. But today we're talking about boys. The first thing that you can do that can save you in some companies, as much as 30 percent, is to make sure that your son has a 3,0 grade point average or better. Good student discounts are excellent. Another aspect is to consider what kind of a car your son is driving. Sometimes parents go out and they buy their dream car for their son, only to find out that the comp and collision, the physical damage on that car, can be more than three times the cost of their own physical damage on the cars that the adults are driving. Maybe you should consider having your son get an older car, one that you can comfortably put liability only on. The other option that you have is to go ahead and maybe share a vehicle with them. That is not the easiest thing to do with teenage boys, because they're gonna wanna drive all the time, but if it's a matter of affording insurance or having no car whatsoever, it may be a consideration that you might have. In insuring teenage boys, absolutely, positively make sure that your son understands the importance of staying within the speed limit. Many times young boys get lead foots and they'll go too fast when they first start out driving. You add a ticket onto an already high insurance premium and sometimes your going to look at astronomical figures. So make sure that your son understands the importance of obeying speed limits, make sure that he stays a good student, and consider sharing a vehicle with them. This is Melissa Morley with All Seasons Insurance, and today we've been talking about ways to lower the insurance premium for your teenage boy.
