Hi, I'm Jill Brown, I'm a certified fitness instructor and I've been training for 18 years. I'm coming to you today from west L.A. at L.A. Dance Fit. We are going to talk today about the advantages of exercising on land. Now a lot of people think that the best way to exercise might be in water. And water training, aqua aerobics, or aqua exercise, or swimming is fantastic. Especially for people with arthritis or might have injuries. Or whose doctor told them that they need to do exercise that is none weight bearing. The difference is when you exercise on land you are actually doing weight bearing activity. And what that does is it helps strengthen the muscle and bone more so then exercising in water. Some examples of great exercises that are not too high impact but will also help strengthen the muscle and bone include weight training, exercising with machines, or dumbbells or bands. As well as hiking, walking briskly, using your treadmill and elliptical trainer. And possibly jogging. Now if you have issues like arthritis or some bone problems you always want to clear that with your doctor. And you may not want to do activities that have high impact. And those are activities like jogging or running a little bit faster, jump roping, or doing any sort of plyometric activities. So remember when you are trying to increase bone density and muscle strength you want to be working against gravity and using your own body weight. And have that weight bearing activity on your muscle and bones to help increase the density and strength. However, again if you have injuries or your doctor told you to stay away from weight bearing or impact activities then it is safer to workout in a pool. I'm Jill Brown and I'm at L.A. Dance Fit.
