Hello, I'm Jeffrey Ingalls, president of Stratford Financial Group and Stratford Employer Services in Wayne, New Jersey, and right now we're going to talk about: How Long Does COBRA Insurance Last? COBRA is a federal labor law that allows qualified beneficiaries the right to continue their group insurance coverage at group insurance rates that may otherwise have been lost or terminated. So after making a formal election how long does COBRA insurance last? The maximum length of COBRA continuation will depend upon the qualifying event that you've experienced. Some examples of qualifying events may be an employees loss of employment, a reduction in hours, or Medicare entitlement. These qualifying events will allow a participant to continue for up to 18 months. Some examples of a 36 month continuation period would be qualifying events such as divorce or legal separation, the death of a covered employee or a dependent child ceasing to meet the definition of a dependent under the group contract. Some secondary events such as total disability will allow COBRA to last an additional 11 months. It's important to note that if you pay your premiums late or your former employer sells the company or files for bankruptcy, your COBRA period may also promptly end.
