Hello, I'm Jeffrey Ingalls. I'm the president of Stratford Financial Group, and Stratford Employer Services in Wayne, New Jersey, and right now we're going to talk about, what is a dependent for health insurance? A dependent for health insurance is typically defined by the health insurance contract, and will likely include the following persons: the spouse, a dependent child, until at least the age of 26, as defined and declared by health care reform. A child is typically defined as a biological child, an adopted child, a stepchild, or foster child. Certain contracts may allow older dependents to remain insured as a dependent, in the event of a permanent disability, or if the child is a full-time student at an accredited college or university. It's important to note that prior to health care reform, dependents were often only covered until a certain age, such as 19, or longer, such to age 25 if they were a full-time student at an accredited college or university. This is still often the case, and often the dependent age limit's used in other coverages, such as group, employer sponsored dental, or vision coverages. So as a quick tip, it's important that you realize whether or not your dependents are covered as an eligible dependent under both your medical and any other group insurance coverages that may be available to you through your employer. My name is Jeffrey Ingalls. I'm the president of Stratford Financial Group, and Stratford Employer Services in Wayne, New Jersey.
