Hi my name is Marija. I'm a mathematician and today I'm going to show you how to convert measurements in math. So you're always going to be given the standard conversion that you're going to have to deal with so let's say I give you the information that one cup is equal to eight fluid ounces. Okay so this is the information you're dealing with and what you're asked to convert is three cups. You want to know how many ounces are in three cups. The best way to convert is to set up a proportion and a proportion is two equal fractions. Now what you do is the equivalent that you were given the statement that you were given, one cup equals eight fluid ounces, that's always going to be your first fraction. So I'm going to set that up as 1/8, that's one cup over eight ounces. Now proportion has two equal fractions. So for my other fraction all I have to do is decide where is this other number going to go, in the numerator or the denominator and what I have to make sure is that it's lined up according to the measurement. So 1 was a cup and 8 was an ounce, 3 is a cup so it's going to go ahead and line up with the 1. So I have to make sure that it's cup, cup, ounce, ounce. Now the amount of ounces in 3 cups is what I don't know and when I don't know something in math I place a variable there. So I'm going to go ahead and place an X there. Now how you solve a proportion is by cross multiplying. So I'm doing X times 1 is X, bring down my equal sign, 8 times 3 is 24 and I have finished because my is alone. So X equals 24 meaning that 3 cups is equal to 24 fluid ounces. So that's one way to convert measurements in math is to set up a proportion and your first ratio will always be the equation that you were given. My name is Marija and I just showed you how to do conversions in math.
