Hi, I'm Marci Degman, the aspiring gardener, and today we're going to talk about attracting hummingbirds to your high country garden. Now it's not all that different if you're at a higher elevation but you do have to draw them in, work a little harder to get them there and they do leave in the Winter. So there's a few differences but mainly what you want to do is you want to focus on getting flowers in your garden that are going to bloom early and you're going to put in flowers that are going to be blooming way late in the season so that you can give them something to eat for as many months as possible. I always start out with a nectar feeder because usually when the hummingbirds show up in my garden there isn't a whole lot going on yet so this gets them in, gives them something to eat, they start coming back every day and then when the early flowers open up like the foxglove, which is a perfect flower you want to look for different perennials that have either this funnel type flower bud or things that are cup like because they have to get their little beaks inside the flower to get the nectar. So when you're choosing your plants, again remember early bloomers, you always have Summer bloomers usually without a lot of effort and then late bloomers so they can have something to eat before they go off because most of the time they're going to migrate if you're high in elevation. They're not going to stay through the Winter. If you're lucky enough to keep them, make sure you do put nectar out again when the blooms stop so that you can keep them fed, keep them happy and keep them coming back.
