I'm Rebecca Winn, and I'm a Horticulturist and Landscape Designer. I own Whimsical Gardens, an artistic landscape design company. And today, we're going to talk about how to landscape for low maintenance. A little bit of planning goes a long way towards long term ease of maintaining your landscape. If you want things to stay below a window, for example, as many people do especially in the front of their house, choose plants that only get three to four feet tall so that you don't have to constantly be trimming them. Choose trees that aren't going to get huge if you want something right next to your house so that you don't have to constantly be trimming that. Try to avoid annuals because they, by, by their nature need to be replanted every season. So, that's going to be something that either as a big hole in your garden or you're going to have to constantly be replanting. A lot of perennials take a lot of care. The term perennial makes it feel like you put it there and it's there forever, but they have to be cut back in the winter, sometimes they have to be trimmed in the spring, sometimes they're very spreading, so they get bigger than you want them. So, if you do a little research and you find out how big the plants get, how much they spread, what kind of care they require, then you don't have to choose those that are hard. Things like roses, the old fashion hybrid teas were a lot of work. But, they are so many landscape roses now that are very easy. So, my recommendation is to decide what you want in terms of height in your garden, decide how much time you want to spend and then choose plants that will grow too and then maintain the size that you're looking for.
