Hi, I'm Christy Wilhemi from, and this is how to mulch cucumbers. Now, mulch serves a couple of different purposes. So, it has its pros and cons. Let's talk about that, first. Mulch is a great way to keep moisture in your soil. It helps reduce evaporation from the soil, and it keeps your roots and the soil cool, which plants love. On the other hand, mulch is decaying matter, and there are a lot of insects that really like to live in decaying matter. So, you may increase your pest population if you use it. So, use at your own risk. So, if you're growing cucumbers without a trellis, the vines actually perform their own living mulch, and then you don't have to worry about mulching anything. But, if you're growing them up a trellis like this one here, you might consider laying something down. Different materials that you can use include chip bark, like this one right here, or you can use straw or hay, or even shredded newspaper. But, my personal favorite is to use compost. Because, as you put compost on the plants, you're actually feeding them, as well as protecting the root system. So, those are my suggestions for how to mulch cucumbers. I'm Christy Wilhemi from
