This is Dr. Jeff Gardere, America's Psychologist on the importance of vocabulary and how parents can teach vocabulary at home. Vocabulary development during the childhood years is absolutely essential to communication, reading, writing, speaking, listening as well as all future success in school, work and life. The following is what you can do at home to help your child learn vocabulary. Talk to your baby as much as possible while he's still in the crib and you may want to pronounce certain words more slowly when the baby begins to learn language; again, using the proper adult pronunciation. While in the infant stage and beyond, read to your child every morning and every evening. As your child gets older, use index cards to write words and their meanings and have your child learn new words on a daily basis and of course, have them put it in a sentence. When it comes to Internet or video games, there are a plethora; well, how's that for a vocabulary word, of games and sites where there are fun activities associated with learning vocabulary words. I'm sure there are so many things that you can do to encourage daily reading in your child, but perhaps the most important behavior you can model is by often reading on your own in front of your child. This is Psychologist, Dr. Jeff Gardere discussing the importance of vocabulary and how parents can teach vocabulary at home.
