This is Dr. Jeff Gardere, “America’s Psychologist,” with the importance of respecting parents. The relationship that children have with their parents will serve as the foundation of the relationships they have with others throughout their lives. So, it stands to reason that if you disrespect your parents, you will disrespect everyone else, including authority figures outside of the home. You’ll not only have problems in school and at work, but problems keeping that job, and also have major issues in keeping social and committed and healthy romantic relationships. That’s why it’s imperative that you learn the importance of respecting the central figures in your life, your parents. The following are some tips towards respecting your parents. First, make sure you understand the meaning of respect, especially the idea that in order to gain the respect of others, you must be willing to give respect and earn it. And, the first order of respect goes to your own parents. When you’re frustrated with your parents, disengage for the moment. Think about what you’re feeling, what it is that you want to say, what your parents are feeling. Then, go back and speak to your parents again in a calmer fashion. Too often, we’re disrespectful to our parents because we’re not willing to hear the truth. But, we must utilize the wisdom of the years that our parents have lived. So, you must be open to what it is that is so difficult to hear. You just might learn something. So, R-E-S-P-E-C-T, what it means to me, what it means to you, and towards your parent. Well, simply, everything. This is Dr. Jeff Gardere, “America’s Psychologist,” on the importance of respecting parents.
