Hi, my name's Tim Tracy, co-founder of InsuringCT.com, and this is how to find health insurance for the self-employed. Being your own business owner takes a lot of risk, but it can also have a lot of reward. One of those risks you don't want to take is going without health insurance. There's a number of different options available to you, being self-employed. In many states, you may actually have access to small group health insurance plans that are available. You also should have access to individual options that you can purchase on the private marketplace. But the one thing you'd want to do as a small business or self-employed business owner is to contact an agent, specifically one that works in your state and knows the different options available to small employers or self-employed individuals. What you want to do is assess the type of coverage you need. That requires two things. You want to step back and look at, who do I need to insure? Am I insuring just myself, or do I have a spouse or dependent children that I also need to insure. And, of course, one of the most important things being self-employed is the budget. What can I financially afford from a health insurance standpoint? Once you determine that, you're going to want to look at the range of different options that's available to you. And you're going to want to compare the ones that fall within your budget. Your agent or broker should be able to assist you to show you which options are going to provide you with the most effective coverage and at the most affordable cost. The next option is enrolling, picking a plan, choosing a carrier that's going to work best for you. What you want to do is look and see if your doctors or the hospitals you utilize participate in that network. Once you've decided the plan that works best for you, the network that works best for you, and the one that's the most cost effective option, it's your time to enroll. The enrollment process can run very smooth, and your broker or agent is going to assist you through that entire plan.
