Hi, I'm Lesa G. Williams, Owner of Mix in San Diego, California. Today, I'll be talking you through the four elements of jazz dance. Now, the basic techniques in jazz dance are the following; one would be technique, making sure that you're actually taking class regularly so that you're working on your form. That includes pointed toes, placement of arms, the head and neck, posture and knowing your basic formations of where your feet need to go. So, taking your ballet, your jazz and your technique classes. Next would be style and a lot of times style comes from knowing what your style is. So, you can take some music, play some music and then move however your body naturally moves. Maybe go to a club and freestyle there and see how your body usually moves to music. Then, it becomes easier for you to pick up on someone else's style. So, if you have to learn someone else's choreography and pick up on their style, it becomes a little bit easier for you. Next would be musicality. And you want to make sure that you're used to different types of music. So, different beats for different types of songs; being able to follow where the beat is and staying on rhythm and syncopation. And then lastly would be energy. So, different choreographic styles have different power levels. So, for example, if you're doing a really high energy dance, you want to make sure that your cardiovascular fitness is intact so that you can match the choreography and the beat of the music. Maybe it's a little bit more low key and you want to make sure that your lines are able to match the length of the music, the flowiness of the music. So, again, you have the four elements which would be your technique, your style, your musicality and your ability to match the music. So, I'm Lesa G. Williams from Mix Studio in San Diego, California and those are the four elements of jazz dance.
