Hi, everyone! I'm Angela Vallee, personal chef of Meals on Heels in St. Petersburg, Florida, for eHow. Today we're going to talk about how to tell when figs are ripe. Now, fresh figs usually appear in the produce markets in late June with a season that lasts until early fall. The first to arrive on the market are Black Mission figs. Later are green figs. Now, figs do not ripen after they're picked. So, they must be at their peek when they're harvested. This makes them particularly fragile and vulnerable to bruises and damaging. So, when figs are sold at the produce markets or at the grocery store, they're ready to eat. So, what you want to look for are figs that are tender to the touch and have a nice sweet fragrance. So, carefully touch each fig before you buy it to make sure they haven't become too soft and thus, overripe. I'm Angela Vallee for eHow, and this is how to tell when fresh figs are ripe.
