Making a Homemade Children's Book for Toddlers & Preschoolers

Hi, my name is Laura Eldredge. I'm an early child educator and co-creator of the SEEDS Network. Today, I'm going to show you how to make a homemade children's book that you can use for preschoolers and toddlers. Making some books at home, some simple little books that your preschoolers can actually fill with their own stories or maybe pictures of the things that they are interested in is a great way to improve their early literacy skills. And so this simple book here we just take some half sheets of white construction paper. Fold them in half. And I'll take a few sheets and fold them. And I'm going to put the open edges to the inside of the book. So if I fold a half sheet of construction paper for the cover and I'm going to put the open end or what would be the open ends on the inside. So that the folded edges are what's on the outside for turning pages. And it just makes the book a little bit more sturdy when little hands want to read their book over and over, and over again rather then single sheets of paper. So that just gives it a little bit more weight and durability. I'm also going to show you how you can make a pop up book. And again it's great because you can have them cut out pictures of things that they're interested in so they can make a book with some collage pictures of things that they might be interested in. And so for this one I preprinted a book title and allowed a place for them to put their name as the author of the book. And when they open the pages you can preprint some words or have them dictate a story to you related to the picture that's on the page. And if they turn the page another scene pops up. And so the way to create the pop up pages you might want to preprint something or again just use a blank piece of white paper. And you are going to fold it in half. You are going to roughly find the middle of the page. It doesn't have to be exact. You don't have to measure it out. And you'll just take make two snips. So kind of cutting out like a little notch. Then pop it open and then pop the notch forward like this. So that gives you your little fold. And then take some glue, glue stick and glue it to your picture and stick it right on that little notch. And then the page folds. It will be closed but when you open it will pop out. Then to stick it into your book you are going to want to adhere the top of this page with the back of the previous page. So again a little glue on each side. You can stick them together. Staple it closed. And now they have their own pop up book. Thanks for tuning in today.
