I'm Jaylene Garau, author of "The Motivated Child." Today, we're going to be talking about age appropriate bedtimes for kids. Now, as a former classroom teacher, it was always very obvious to me when kids weren't getting enough rest. They often were not as alert, they were unable to retain information and many times their mood was very different. Now if your child occasional sleepless night, that's normal. We all have that. But if you start noticing that it is happening more and more often, you should definitely talk to your child's pediatrician. So, many parents ask, OK. what is a good bed time for my child. Well, please recognize that there are only general guidelines out there. Some kids could benefit from more hours or less hours. But according to the national sleep foundation, toddlers should get anywhere from 12 to 14 hours a day and that does include naps. Pre-schoolers, 11 to 13 hours a day and kids, ages five to ten years old, should get 10 to 11 hours a day and teens, and this is ages 10 to 17, should get about eight to nine hours a day.
