How to Prepare & Paint Kitchen Cabinets

Hi, I'm Monica D Higgins at dontremodelwithoutus.com and I'm here in Van Nuys, California at Thomas Craven Wood Finishers. And today we're going to show you how to prepare and paint your old kitchen cabinets. Now the key to a great paint job is a great prep job. You want to prep your cabinets so that the new paint adheres to the cabinets and your paint job's going to last. Because nobody wants to go through all that hassle just to see their paint peeling after several weeks or months after doing your project. To get started you're going to need the following materials. You're going to need tri-sodium phosphate, you're also going to need a wood filler. You'll need sandpaper and a buffer, Scotch Brite, as well as primer. The tri-sodium phosphate is an industrial grade cleaner that's going to remove that grease and grime that's been on your cabinets for years. Because lets face it they probably have never been cleaned before. Next you're going to take a wood filler. That wood filler is going to fill in those defects, those cracks and crevices or dings from when you've dropped some pans, to make it even. Then you're going to take sandpaper and in the direction of the wood of the grain start sanding so you can create a smooth finish on your cabinets. A smooth surface or texture. Follow that with the Scotch Brite. The Scotch Brite is going to allow you to buff what you have just sanded, to again, provide that texture. And then you're going to be ready for priming your cabinets. So you're going to apply your primer. And then after you prime you're going to sand the cabinets again. Again, that's going to give you that texture that you need so that when you apply your paint it's going to stick. Because again, once again, you want it to stay put. You don't want to spend your time doing the project only to have the paint peel away weeks or months later. I'm Monica D.
