Activities for Children Communicating With Adults

Hi I'm Dr. Roberta Marowitz, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Florida and CEO of The Digital Academy, Home of Sane Games, computer games for families and children. Today we're talking about activities for children communicating with adults. When speaking with children as a parent or a caregiver there are some things that you know help children. One is depending upon their age, of course if they're long you want to sit at the child's level, you want to maintain eye contact with them. So it could be that you're sitting right next to them. It could be that you're getting on your knees. It could be that you are helping them get into a chair where they can see you at eye's level but you want to be able to communicate with them on their level. You're going to change your language. You don't have to change your voice, although some people do but you do want to change your words so that they are words that they understand and they are words that they relate to and they understand you in a very calm and soft voice. Children respond to tone of voice. So when you seem welcoming to them then they warm up to you. So your job is to concentrate on what the child is saying, make sure that you hear what it is that they're saying, that you respond to what it is that they're asking for or what it is they're trying to communicate with you. So you're going to notice how they feel but there are some activities that you can do with them that are really pretty fun for kids. Adults tend to like them as well. One of them is reading various kinds of books or looking at picture kinds of books or viewing things on the computer with kids. So depending upon the age that they are, you can pick the kind of activity that you're going to do with them but part of fun for kids is spending time with you and they might not know exactly what it is that you like doing and your job is figuring out what they like doing because ultimately you're going to have more fun doing things that they like because they're going to respond better. So you want to encourage them to talk. They're not going to sit and have a conversation with you necessarily but they'll get snippets of conversation. So it could be for instance that you are taking a walk somewhere around a park and although you're not going to talk with them about a particular interest area that you have, you may have conversation with them when they are seeing a puppy or they're seeing other kids playing and you might say things to them like boy they like having fun doing that. How do you like having fun? So that you're able to have little bits of conversation with them where they share information and then you move on to something else. So, sharing before going to bed is a wonderful thing. Kids really do like talking about their day and it's a way to help them relax and so sometimes if you're sitting there with a book or sometimes if you're sitting there cuddling stuffed animals or just enjoying time with them they will recount what their feelings for the day have been when they're in a more relaxed state. So play games, play board games, play video games, play card games, play virtual games, play hide and seek. Kids love games. So, as much as you look like you are into it, they will adore you and you'll have fun.
