Hi there. My name is Ryan Malloy here at the World Wide Center of Mathematics. In this video we're going to discuss how to balance equations. So here we have an equation negative y plus 81 equals 9y minus nine. And we want to find the value of y that balances this equation and make it so the left side is equal to the right side. So we're just going to slowly and methodically solve for y. So the first thing we're going to do is we're going to add nine to both sides of the equation. Remember to keep an equation in balance, whatever you do to one side you must to do the other. So add nine here, add nine here. And what we get is negative y plus 90 equals 9y. OK. Now we're going to add y to both sides of the equation. Plus y here, plus y there. And what we get is 90 equals 10y. The last step is we're going to divide by ten on both sides of the equation. And our final answer is that y is equal to nine. Now an important step is to take whatever number you get and plug it back into your original equation to make sure that it's accurate. So we're going to do that over here. Negative nine plus 81 equals nine times nine minus nine. OK. So 81 minus nine is equal to 72. Nine times nines is 81 minus nine and we see that this is indeed true. 72 equals 72. If you're equation is balanced you should be able to reduce it to a form where you just get a number equaling itself. And that's all there is to it.
