Hi, I'm Jimmy Chang and we're here to talk about the geometric definition of quadrilaterals. Now it's one of those straightforward definitions that requires just a little bit of going over but once you understand how the word is formed, I think you'll understand he definition behind it. Now, with quadrilaterals one of the things you want to look at is the prefix. Quad, now you may have remembered from previous courses that quad means 4, laterals talks about sides. So quadrilaterals is a four sided figure. Well we're going to simplify it by calling it a four sided polygon okay because the polygons is really the other characteristic of a quadrilateral. It's four sides, but polygon talks about closed shape so the definition, the geometric definition of a quadrilateral is a four sided closed shape. So what kind of shapes come to mind, a rectangle, a square, a parallelogram things like that but frankly if you can draw any figure that's got four sized and is closed, you've got a quadrilateral. So for example, this is a quadrilateral, that's a quadrilateral, a little funky but it's four sides and it's closed. Now, not a quadrilateral because it's not a closed shape. That's the other part of the definition. So once you understand how the word works you'll be able to draw any quadrilateral that you like. So I'm Jimmy Chang and that's the geometric definition of a quadrilateral.
