Hi. I'm Bob Holcomb from Apex Automotive in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Today, we're going to talk a little bit about rust on our exhaust system. The rust is caused through oxidation. Most of the rust on this exhaust seems to be accumulating right here. The reason we have this corrosion is 'cause we have dissimilar metals. The pipe and the bolt are two different metals--similar, but different. And that's where the oxidation takes place. Electricity flows at different rates through these metals and causes this corrosion. As you can see, it falls off pretty easy, and it's flaking away. And, actually, it's your exhaust or your metal pieces just falling off the car and deteriorating. We can remove this rust in a couple of different ways. We can use a wire brush and brush the rust away, or we could just take a hammer and vibrate the rust from the exhaust. If I give it a good whack, most of the rust is going to fall off this exhaust system. You want to be careful, whenever dealing underneath a car with rust, to make sure you have on some sort of eye protection. So, when I hit this exhaust, just by the sound of it, I can tell it has good integrity. I can tap it in other places and it all sounds good--nice and solid. There's a lot of rust on it, but this exhaust is still in good shape. It might be a good idea to make sure we keep it clean and keep the salt off of this exhaust system. That'll keep it from corroding any further. And that's how we remove rust from an exhaust system. I'm Bob Holcomb from Apex Automotive in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
