My name is David King. I'm the author of Growing Food in Southern California. Today, we're going to talk about growing a bamboo fence or a bamboo wall. This is a phyllostachys bamboo - phyllostachys aurea. Phyllostachys aurea is one of the bamboos called a running bamboo. They send out a very long runner, and that very long runner will quickly and easily build a fence for you if you can control it. First of all, though, this is a nice rich beautifully textured wall or fence. It will provide you with a certain amount of privacy. It goes to about 15 to 20 feet high. So we're over here at the other side of the bamboo. Right before me, this is a brand new palm of bamboo. Down here, you can see the runner. This is very characteristic of phyllostachys. That's the genus of this type of running bamboo. It will send out these long runners, and unless you control them, they will go all over the place. Just having a sidewalk in your pod doesn't control them, because they'll go underneath the sidewalk. You need to have a plastic barrier placed about two to three feet below the surface of the soil that will stop the bamboo from growing through. With the runners in the bamboo being controlled by the plastic sheeting, these runners will perform and go out and the way you want them to, and will fill in quickly, creating an entire fence along the area you desire. If you're in a hurry, you can plant several of these plants together. They will quickly grow up to about 15 feet tall, and they will fill in rather rapidly, and soon you'll have a nice lush screen like we have here.
