Triathlon is a sport that is growing in popularity because it's a great way to get and stay in shape.     I started competing in triathlons four years ago, and once you compete in a triathlon, you are hooked for life. I began covering triathlons as a reporter for a local newspaper and it really grabbed my interest. Training for and competing in triathlons has really taught me alot about myself.       During the off season one of the best things any triathlete can do to improve their times is not working on their legs, swim technique or by taking a spin classes. While all those are good things to work on, the area that will give you the most benefit is your core. Having a strong midsection can help lower times, reduce fatigue when running or biking and give you more power when in the water. And since you can work your abs everyday and practically anywhere, there is no reason to skip this exercise even when the snow is falling outside.

      For a lot of triathletes, during the season with all the training it entails, they can eat anything and then simply burn off the calories with their workout for the day. But during the off season, the body slows down but sometimes the appetite does not. For most people, the urge to eat or snack is a psychological one. We don't always eat because we are hungry, sometimes it is out of boredom, other times stress. During the season, these lapses in will power were fine as the training would take care of it. During the off season, this type of eating can lead to unwanted weight gain. How to best fight off the this belly expanding habit is to focus on eating healthy snacks. Apples, carrots and celery are a few snacks that can be healthy snacks. And because they are high in fiber, they make you feel fuller longer.
