No tapered pants, especially if you're trying to balance out your proportions. A long leg on pants elongates the visual line of the body and a slightly flared leg adds a nice shape.
Tapered pants and jeans are for old photos, and apparently some current designers are convinced they work, they don't.

I find wearing a nice, tailored, unbuttoned, silk blouse over a sleeveless shell or tank top with a pair of slacks or skirt does well to hide a large stomach. Make sure the blouse and shell are long enough to cover your midsection and your bottom and hips, like a tunic. Even more slimming is wearing a matching shell that goes with your slacks. For example, I will wear a colorful printed tailored silk blouse over a black silk shell with black slacks. The black shell with the black slacks blends together, giving you a more long, sleek, slender look, and the colorful blouse is just enough color so that you don't look like you've got too much black on.
Also try wearing jacket dresses. A basic A-line dress worn under a silk or linen blazer works wonders to hide a large stomach.

Wear jackets that come in at the waist to create an hour glass shape that will minimize a large stomach. Also, try to wear straight leg pants, never tapered.

If you are a women, do not wear a square jacket, ever. They are very dumpy and manly looking. Unless you are going for the man look, stay away from them. Even if you have a larger midsection, jackets that are nipped in at the waist make you look more stream lined, it gives the appearance of a waist.

Don't wear tapered pants! It makes you look like a penguin. Tights and stirrup pants are just as bad (for the same reason), and they also make you look like you've been hibernating since the 80's.

If you have a gut, wear a shirt designed to be worn out instead of tucked in. A subdued Hawaiin shirt or Guayaberas shirt can be dressed up with Khakis or dress slacks for all but the most formal environments. Get rid of the tucked-in polo, because I guarantee that the gut will be more noticable than the spiffy company logo.

on 11/22/2005 Cheat and wear tights with built-in support. These also slim the hips and thighs.
