Return to article: How to Make a Hot Toddy for a Flu
on 12/3/2007 Here's a family recipe - tea with blackberry brandy. Instead of honey and lemon, drop in a honey-lemon Halls cough drop and let it melt. Inhale the vapors as you drink. :)
on 6/30/2006 My version of a hot toddy uses ginger ale (Reed's Natural ginger ale is preferred). Boil a liberal amount of ginger ale in a pot (you can also add a lemon flavored tea bag once it is boiled if you want), squeeze in like half a lemon, add some whiskey, bourbon, rum, or vodka (any hard liquor I suppose), and that should do it.The ginger ale helps settle your stomach a bit and the properties of ginger help your sinuses. The alcohol, ginger ale, and warmth of the beverage will help you literally sweat out the sickness. Don't be surprised if you find yourself covered with sweat, that means it is working. Feel better!
on 6/30/2006 Crawl into bed, cover yourself with a lot of blankets to assist your body in sweating out the cold. Works great together.
on 11/22/2005 My family has been making the "hot toddy" for colds and flu for over 100 years and it does help. Great Grandpa said to use 1) hot tea 2) whiskey 3) honey and 4) lemon. (The lemon is important.) Hope you feel better soon!
on 11/22/2005 To help ease my husband's symptoms, I use peppermint tea, some lemon, fresh ginger, chopped garlic, along with a dash of apple cider vinegar and enough honey to make it palatable. Simmer for a while and add the liquor before sipping ... a sure winner.
on 11/22/2005 A squeeze of lemon in the hot toddy gives it a nice flavor, and adds a little shot of vitamin C. Or try using lemon-flavored tea.
on 11/22/2005 Stir 2 ozs. of peppermint schnapps into a cup of hot chocolate. It will ease the dry, scratchy feeling and the peppermint also will help open your sinuses.
on 11/22/2005 Combine one cup of very hot orange juice (any variety, instant or frozen) and one shot of brandy.
on 11/22/2005 In my family, we made toddies with hot water, honey, lemon, and brandy.
on 11/22/2005 When ever I got sick as a child, with a cold or the like, my Grandmother always gave me a hot toddy made with hot water, rock sugar(crystals) and burbon. I'd sleep like a baby! She also made a cough syrup by combining burbon, honey and lemon juice.
