Return to article: How to Relieve a Sore Throat
on 6/30/2006 Make hot tea, then add about 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, 2 teaspoons of honey and two throat lozenges (with menthol). This works really well.
on 3/13/2006 Chloraseptic works instantly, but only on the part of your throat below your mouth. This goes for all the other remedies that coat your throat, like sugar and honey. I have found that when I have a soar throat, the tissue coming down from my nose is also inflamed. So I use a Q-tip and rub Chloraseptic far back in my nose. Also I sniff it in deep, as you do with nasal spray. I hurts for about 5 seconds, but then it numbs completely. Nothing else has worked as well for me.
on 2/23/2006 Throat sprays just do not work for long enough. Go to the chemist and find 1000 mg strength Vitamin C, either as a drink or a pill, and have one of these a day as soon as your throat starts to hurt. Then take the recommended dose of soluble aspirin in a little hot water from the kettle (about enough for 5 mouthfuls) and gargle with it, so that the aspirin gets to work straight away on your tonsils. Swallow the aspirin, do not spit it out, and repeat as necessary.
on 1/19/2006 Rest your voice, unless it's just barely sore and you know how to use good breath support. Using it won't really help anything and will make your throat hurt more. Unless you are really desperate, don't use your voice much. Also, sucking on hard candy can be soothing.
on 1/13/2006 Get an orange, cut into quarters, cut the fruit from the skin, then eat the fruit, then drain the juice from the skins in a glass. Suck the orange skin, drink the orange juice, and it should soothe your sore throat!
on 1/6/2006 Something that always relieves my sore throat is Chloraseptic sore throat spray. It's one of the worst things you'll ever taste, but it really provides fast relief. I find it works best after brushing my teeth.
on 12/12/2005 When you have a sore throat, go to bed or go on the computer and do activities at home, never outside. Having a sweater on a cold day should help even more, if you absolutely need to go outside for an emergency, bring you sweater and some warm pants.
on 11/22/2005 If you know you have strep throat, do not drink ice cold liquids or eat cold foods, such as ice cream. This can actually cause the strep throat to feel worse.
on 11/22/2005 If your sore throat is caused by something other than talking too much or anything of that sort, sing the pain away. Don't go right into your favorite song though, sing a couple of scales (do one note, hold for 5-10 seconds, then move up, then down, holding each note for 5-10 seconds). Also, if your clearing your throat too much, that could probably be the cause. Try humming when you would normally clear you throat.
on 11/22/2005 Every two hours, alternate taking acetaminophen (2 pills) and ibuprofen (2 pills) until the sore throat is gone. At 8 AM, take 2 acetaminophen, and at 10 AM take 2 ibuprofen, etc. If you wait until you have severe throat pain, this may take 6-8 hours or 3-4 medicine doses. Once the pain is gone, take the next scheduled dose only when you feel the sore throat coming. Generally, you won?t have to take medicine for 4-6 hours, and eventually you will find that the pain is gone altogether. This works every time for me, but you have to be diligent, or the strength of two medicines will not work. A nurse practitioner told me this secret, and I have never been bothered by sore throat pain when on this regimen!
on 11/22/2005 If you have a really bad cough, take a teaspoon of sugar and eat it. The sugar is incredibly soothing and calming for the throat. It can help the cough within minutes.
on 11/22/2005 Gargling with hydrogen peroxide provides immediate and almost always permanent relief. Tilt your head back so the solution rests on the back of your throat. Try to hold it until the bubbling stops, but if you must spit, repeat the process until it either stops bubbling completely or the pain is gone.Warning: DO NOT SWALLOW! Using very small amounts will do (usually about a teaspoon), and the more you use the more likely you are to accidentally ingest some. This is NOT recommended for children.
on 11/22/2005 If you don't like hot tea or other hot beverages (which are good for sore throats and coughs) try drinking hot Dr. Pepper. I personally don't like other hot beverages, but have found that by heating a coffee cup's worth of Dr. Pepper, it eases my throat and cough. Plus, the caffeine (which is in a lot of cough and cold medicines) helps as well!
on 11/22/2005 Coat your throat with a couple teaspoons of honey every few hours. This will take away some of the pain and irritation.
on 11/22/2005 Suck on a milk lolly or ice pop. This cools a sore throat and introduces more liquids when it is hard to swallow.
