Return to article: How to Begin to Play the Trombone
on 11/22/2005 Practice long notes (4 to 8 counts) slowly. This will help with tone color and muscle building.
on 11/22/2005 Learning to buzz is the first step in learning any brass instrument, but it is not always the easiest. The best way I've found to teach others how to buzz is to first say the letter "M." Hold the position your lips are in and blow out. It may feel weird at first (and in most cases even tickle a little bit), but it just takes some getting used to.
on 12/23/2005 When warming up on your trombone, try to do lip slurs. A lip slur is playing all of the notes at a certain position (for example: B flat, F, High B flat, D) by changing the way your lips are set and the speed of your air. This will help your technique and tone.
on 11/22/2005 Don't use "Pledge" cleaner, because it'll hurt that bad boy. Use "Slide-o-mix." It's a very neat product! Get the complete cleaning system. The company is dedicated to making cleaning supplies for trombones and trombones only! I trust my trombone in their hands...How 'bout you?
on 11/22/2005 Don't use slide oil or slide cream on your slide. The absolute best stuff for a fast slide is Pledge furniture polish. Get the lemon-scented Pledge in LIQUID form in a spray bottle. The aerosol version will corrode your slide over time. Good luck!
on 11/22/2005 After you use the slide a lot, you might have to get slide cream if it gets sticky.
