on 11/22/2005 I trained my young son to put the seat down and my cats helped with my husband. I had put bleach tablets in the toilet tank so we ALL had to put the seat down so the cats wouldn't drink out of the toilet!

on 11/22/2005 A friend of mine was worried about something falling in the toilet. After she discovered that warning him didn't work, she started throwing some of his things in the toilet. Nothing too small or nothing that couldn't be immersed in water. It worked!

on 11/22/2005 We have two bathrooms in our house. One is considered Dad's bathroom and the other one is the girls' bathroom. The seat must be left in the upright position in Dad's bathroom and must be put down in the girls' bathroom when finished.

on 11/22/2005 I used a large, purple Magic Marker to write, "Shut the #*! lid" on the underside of the toilet seat that my ex-husband would leave up. Worked pretty well until Dad came to visit. It is hard to get purple marker off a toilet seat.

on 11/22/2005 Consider leaving both covers down. This way both sexes have to raise the seat before use.

on 11/22/2005 If all of these handy tips fail, just be thankful that they lifted the lid in the first place! There are a lot of worse things in life to deal with.

on 11/22/2005 A guy friend of mine told me that his mother used to wake him up in the middle of the night to put the toilet seat down. This strategy definitely worked because his wife has no problems with him leaving the seat up thanks to this resourceful mom.

on 11/22/2005 I started by sticking down the seat with strong tape, so he stuck it up, so I put Glad wrap on the seat, he tore a hole, I stuck a baby seat on top, he took it off, after we finished laughing he got the hint...

on 11/22/2005 Throw a big enough hissy fit that, rather than hear you whine, complain, and throw a tantrum each time you find the seat up or fall in, he decides to just sit down to take care of the task. My husband decided it was much simpler and quieter this way.

on 11/22/2005 When you go to the toilet in the middle of the night and the seat is up, let out a scream of total terror. When he gets to you and asks what is wrong, simply say, "I fell in." It won't take much of this and he will be certain the seat is down.

on 11/22/2005 Gently mention that you know how much he would hate for your infant to toddle into the bathroom and drown.

on 11/22/2005 Don't share a bathroom with him. I use the master bath; my husband uses the other bathroom. It then becomes his responsibility to clean it up (sink plus mirror plus toilet seat rim) before company arrives.

on 11/22/2005 I went out and bought a toilet seat that goes down by itself. Cost about $30 and was well worth it. I use this in my bathroom downstairs. They clean their own upstairs. Now I just have to work on the men at work!

on 11/22/2005 When my toddler threw something in the toilet, I made Dad fish it out... If the toilet seat had been closed, nothing would have fallen in! Dad never left the lid up again. My son also learned the proper position is closed. His wife will thank me someday.

on 11/22/2005 Warn them that they will pay. Then get a squirt bottle and give them the surprise you get when falling in at 2 a.m. Do it when they least expect it (before leaving the house, when they first wake up). They WILL learn.
