Comments on How to Jump-Start Labor

  • paulsbabygirl Jun 21, 2010
I heard castor oil really works. Every site you look at about inducing labor says to use it as like the number 1 thing. I am actually trying to avoid having my baby because I will have to have a csection and I don't want to. This is my 3rd pregnancy and my baby is frank breech so I am hoping he turns and I want him to have time... I am 36 weeks

Breaking the "bag of waters" (membrane rupture) carries serious risks including cord prolapse and potential infection, and is not recommended unless the risks of continuing the pregnancy are higher than waiting for labor. Also, most hospitals require that a woman delivers her baby within 24 hours of membrane rupture, to reduce the risk of infection. If labor doesn't begin soon on it's own, you'll most likely end up on pitocin, which carries risks of its own: double the likelihood of fetal distress and C-section. Do your homework and weigh the risks and benefits before trying ANY induction method.

I am 36 weeks and want her to be here extremely bad. I have a slipped disk and herniated disk in my back so I am in pain all the time. This is my 2nd child, with my 1st I was induced and really don't want to have to go throught that again. I have tried the walking and the sex. I am wondering if I should try the castro oil?? I see everyone's stories how they went into labor not long after taking it so I am curious if I should try it or not. Or if I am trying to early. I went to the dr. and she already weighs 6lbs 10 oz, and she's gained a pound every week that I have went, I got back in 3 days. She will probably weight 7lbs or more. I am worried. Should I do the castro oil now??

I support the previous comment about trying everything. I am 15 days past due and NOTHING has worked. Today I am going to start begging.

I was advised by a midwife to take a bath in Clary sage oil from the health shop. But my labor started itself, so I gave my friend the oil and she used it. She had a healthy baby boy the day she was due to be induced. Another of my friends used it and had her baby within 5 hours of having the bath. Good luck all.

The father of my child was over 10 lbs. at birth, so I did not want to go all the way to my due date and risk having a gigantic baby. Once the ultra sound showed my son was almost 7 lbs. I took Castor oil, just 2 spoonfuls. My water broke 12 hours later and I had him 12 hours after that, pushing for just 2 contractions. He was three weeks early, but perfect. My sister took Castor oil with her second child and had the baby within 3 hours.

I used labor balm when I was 38 weeks pregnant. I had my baby 24 hours later, and I didn't have to use a drop of medication. I was already 2 1/2 cm and 80% effaced when I started applying it, but I believe it made me go into labor.

I have to concur with the previous comments; labor will come when your body and baby are ready. I, too, tried the Castor oil, pineapple, nipple stimulation, walking (my doctor actually told me that this only passes time) and more. I was finally scheduled to be induced on my actual due date, but guess what - my water broke the day before and I gave birth to our second daughter on my husband's 26th birthday. You may think that labor will never come, but it will - just hang in there!

Walking backward contracts the muscles in the front of your belly. This may jump start labor. Do it safely! You shouldn't walk backward around your house (you'll trip over stuff), do it in the water or on a stationary exercises bike, since it's easy to lose your balance while pregnant. My grandmother told me about this when I was a week away from my due date. I figured it was a myth. Then I went home and walked backward taking in the trash cans and it started my labor right away. 4 hours later I had my 8 pound son.

I was due on February 18. On February 27th, I had eggplant parmigiana for dinner. On the 28th, I ate the leftovers for breakfast and lunch. I had my baby at 2:15 a.m. on March 1. Coincidence? You be the judge. (Do a Google search for labor and eggplant, and you'll see where I got the idea.)

Trust me. I tried everything to jump-start my labor. I had sex, drank castor oil (nasty stuff), tried Blue and Black Cohash, and even tried a pressure point that was supposed to start contractions. My son was a week late and they had to give me Pitocin.

Believe me! I am 39 weeks pregnant. I have tried everything! Sex (which is so uncomfortable at this point!), Castor Oil (yuck!), an enema (ugh), black cohosh, pineapple, nipple stimulation. You name it, I have tried it, and I am still pregnant. And only 2 centimeters dilated (still!) It is very stressful to try to force labor to start. Just be patient, and get lots of rest, because you will need it when the actual labor starts (which will happen eventually!)
