Good article. I own two Labs, and I would like to add that they can be protective (not aggressive). My black put himself between me and three steers when one of them threatened me by pawing dirt and lowering his head to charge. He has also chased coyotes from my farmhouse.
Labs are energetic and intelligent and usually get into trouble when bored or lonely. It is not a breed to leave alone most of the time. Do not get a Lab if you can not spend a lot of time with him. Obedience training is a must. They are eager to please which makes training easier. I assure you it is time well spent. Also, forget cute little squeaky toys. They last two minutes. Go for rawhide or the toys labeled for heavy duty chewing. The Lab is the number one breed in America for good reason. My "boys" are great companions.

If there is a dog kind of job to be done the Lab is the one to say "Pick me, pick me, please pick me" Labs are eager to please, eager to learn. I have a black lab and she made first place in basic obedience and she was barely 5 month old. Labs want to be in your company and want attention but will happily wait till you are done with what you need to do. They like retrieving things, so fetch is a great game for them. Mine gets the papaers every morning and loves to retrieve just about anything. She brings me her leash on comand the same with my keys and other items. She knows when I get dressed in the morning that we cant go out without my shoes and she will bring them to me knowing that without them I will not step outside. She would have made a great service dog but I am glad I got her. She has und will for many years to come brought lots of joy and happiness to my finace and me.

I have a 4 yr old 85lb black lab. My husband and I do not have kids yet but he loves my 3 nephews and niece. He loves going for rides and taking baths in his little turtle swimming pool. I hope he is with us many years.

This is clearly posted by an amateur. Labs are not stubborn but rather eager to please and energetic. Also it has been proven through DNA studies that Silver labs are not Weimeramer/lab mixes....rather they are rare genes that result in a silvery or diluted chocolate color. The same can occur in blacks and it's known as charcoal. Do your homework before posting.

Growing up I had a black lab. He was the greatest. Always with me, going for walks...making sure I was ok when I was getting into mischief as a teen. He passed on a few years ago, but every time I go home I expect to see him running to the fence waiting for me to get out of the car.
I adopted a yellow lab puppy. A lot of patience, chew toys, and praise to house break him. I've personally found labs to be the easiest to train as well.

Silver labs are 100% pure labs, AKC registered, and gene mapped. Breeders who say differently are only sour grapes, because their lines do not contain silver genetics.

I have a 10 year old black lab that we picked up at the pound. She is a sister to me. Labs are very smart dogs and will let you know what they want. I couldn't ask for a better friend.

Labs are the best dogs ever! I have one 1 year old right now and am getting another pupping in 3 weeks (yay!). If you're thinking about getting one, make sure you have the patience!!!! They will be chewers whether of not you scold them, they have to chew something, so if they chew your shoe b/c you don't have any chew toys its your fault. Make sure you have a lot of chew toys! They are absolutly perfect after they grow out of there puppy phase and if you stick it through you'll be glad you did!

As quoted from the AKC website, "The Labrador Retriever coat colors are black, yellow and chocolate. Any other color or a combination of colors is a disqualification."

We have a 2 year old Labrador Retriever and she is the most beautiful, fun loving, sweet, affectionate creature we ever could have wished for.

I have a black Labrador who is 8 months old and he is the best. "Chewy" is the most friendly dog I have ever had and loves to go for runs. If you love energetic dogs, Labs are the breed for you!

I was the first child and my parents had a Labrador when I was born. He was the best dog/friend a young child could have had. He took a lot of abuse from my sisters and I. When he was getting old, we got a second Labrador. Now that they have both passed away, the house is empty and it feels like a brother has died. I miss seeing him in the window when I came home. These dogs are great, and so cute and cuddly. The positives outweigh anything else. They're just like a child...You need to childproof everything and keep things you like out of reach--especially food. When they're older, it's great because all they want is food, warmth and love...These are GREAT dogs.
