on 8/8/2006 Don't let the packers list your items as knick knacks, or any other non-descriptive term. We found out the hard way. Many valuable items were missing from our shipment handled by Chipman for United Van Lines. Because we couldn't prove they were in any particular box (boxes which they packed), we were unable to collect any of the insurance. Even with the additional insurance we bought!

on 11/22/2005 About 10 years ago, I had a moving company help me pack and move. Since some of them charge by the weight of the load, they will pack anything and everything in sight. I walked up to one of them packing a box with our garbage!

on 11/22/2005 We've had some great movers, but one group needed constant supervision. They tried to pack the room that was clearly labeled "Stays," wrapped wooden spoons in four layers of paper while throwing breakables in boxes, and wanted to leave a number of items.

on 11/22/2005 Your breakable valuables might not be insured if you pack them yourself. Check with the company you've chosen.
