Return to article: How to Remove Gum from Clothing
on 9/25/2006 I used peanut butter, just like you would to get it out of hair. I rub it on really good and rub together and the gum breaks up. Scrub by hand with either dish detergent or clothes detergent so you don't get that grease mark from the peanut butter.
on 9/24/2006 Apply duct-tape to the gum and peel off rather than lift off. Try the tape first on part of the clothes not seen, to see if the duct-tape adhesive sticks to the clothes. It may take several or many new pieces of tape. Try different techniques, pressing lightly, pressing hard, or many quick hard "blots." Good luck and patience. Worth a try - it will get much of the gum. Works well on light color fabric. Black is more difficult to get it all.
on 8/21/2006 Try some Gojo natural orange pumice hand cleaner. Place on gum that has been hardened with ice or cold water. Rub it in fabric in a circular motion. Pick loose pieces off periodically. You may need to do it a couple of times.
on 8/8/2006 I removed dried, set-in gum from a pair of pants using Lestoil. You can find Lestoil in the supermarket cleaning supply isle. First remove as much gum as you can. Then apply Lestoil to the remaining gum and rub. It should start to dissolve. Then launder as usual. Works great!
on 8/8/2006 Rub a generous amount of creamy peanut butter all over the area. Launder as usual. The peanut butter breaks up the stickiness of the gum allowing you to pick it off easily. Works great for removing gum from hair without having to cut the hair.
on 4/17/2007 I got gum on some khaki shorts, so I put it in my laundry sink and filled it up with water, letting my shorts soak for about 10 minutes. After that I took a scrubber and it came right off.
on 8/8/2006 My husband sat on chewing gum that my three-year-old left on the chair. After he removed the jeans, of course, I got an ice pack from the freezer and let it set for a few minutes. After the gum was nice and hard, I took a butter knife and scraped off all that I could. Then I took Goof Off and squirted it all over the spot and let it set for a minute or so. Then I took a nail brush (it has to be kind of hard bristles) and scrubbed the heck out of it. The gum came off instantly. Then I threw a small amount of dish detergent on the spot and scrubbed it with some cool water.Once it dried, you couldn't see a thing. Good luck!
on 8/8/2006 Use Lava hand soap. Rub soap in circular motion. Gum will come off easily.
on 7/23/2006 I left a piece of gum in the front pocket of my white navy CNT uniform. The worst was I threw it in the washer and dryer. It was so caked into the fabric I thought it would never come out. I put it into the freezer and later took off the little bit I could. I was worried about trying some of the tips on here because even if the gum came off, I didn't want a stain on my white uniform. Well, after trying everything I could think of and failing, I decided to try the WD40 tip. It worked amazingly well!I just soaked the spot then wiped it with a wash cloth and 2 minutes later the gum was completely gone! I put it in the washer right after and when it came out there was no stain from the WD40 and no gum! This tip saved me a couple hundred bucks.
on 7/8/2006 To remove gum quick and easy, always pull off as much gum as possible by hand. Then apply any kind of oil (I use Pam or any cooking spray). This will start to dissolve the gum, making it very loose and slippery. Keep applying the oil and working the gum out. When the gum is out, apply Dawn dish soap to remove the oil.
on 3/29/2006 Peanut butter works wonders getting chewing gum out of hair. Just put it on the gum and let it set a minute and it comes right out.
on 3/26/2006 My daughter got chewing gum on her new cotton school trousers, so I spayed some WD40 on the gum and waited a few minutes, then I rubbed it with the end to my tweezers and it came straight off. I then threw them in the washing machine to get the oil off. WD40 also works for stains on carpets. Spray it on and rub the spot with a damp cloth.
on 3/23/2006 1. Scrape off the excess with a blunt knife.2. Use (what we call in the UK) White Spirit on a rag and rub vigorously on the area.It should come clean in no time. Just stick in the washing machine afterward to get rid of the White Spirit smell.
on 3/20/2006 I used Orange BLAST household cleanser that I got at Fred Meyer. I saturated the area and left it to soak and the gum lifted off. I repeated the procedure several times.
on 1/25/2006 Put the jeans through a wash cycle using hot water and extra detergent. Let the jeans cool for 30 minutes. Then use tape (the stickier the better) and press on the affected areas rubbing over the tape with your fingers and lifting. Repeat with fresh tape until it is all lifted. It took me 15 to 20 minutes to remove all the gum from a large area with the tape. My jeans look perfect again.
