Return to article: How to Create a Punk Rocker Costume
on 11/22/2005 Alright punk is my life. I go to every show I can afford to go to (which means mostly just the local ones) and am proud to contribute to the scene with my own band. I dont really like the idea of a bunch of morons dressing up 'punk' but if you're gonna do it... at least do it right. First of all PUNK = POOR and screew all the rich "punks" who will start crying when I say that... Punk started out as, and will always be, a working class movement. That said... go buy a cheap band shirt from some local band, or just ware a white tank top or something. Get a leather jacket... don't spend a whole bunch of money on it... just go to a thrift store and buy one for 10-15 bucks... make sure its beat up already... I've spent many a night on the streets sleeping in my jacket and it gets banged up... I wouldn't recomend putting more than one or two patches on preferable on the arms or back... a couple pins on the laple... please dont stud your jacket... a studded jacket is the life work of many a punk... we have to buy them a handfull at a time and we take the to put each in, if you want to avoid insult... DONT STUD. throw on a pair of tight jeans (bondage pants are for rich kids, unless of course they're DIY but that takes ALOT of time and skill) As for hair... it doesn't really matter, but to keep up the image eather shave your head and get a hawk (6 to 12 inches) or if you're not that gutsy do liberty spikes (I've done mine up to 16 inches and I've seen longer) us Knox geletin its cheep and holds forever... you can find it in any grocery store next to the Jello. Alright now go out and try to fool me.
on 11/22/2005 If you really want to be punk, it comes from the music, not the clothes or the attitude. You can have an attitude and not be punk. So don't forget where it comes from, man! THE MUSIC!
on 11/22/2005 Make sure you don't confuse punk with goth.
on 11/22/2005 A punk is not much different from me because I'm Goth and some people dress like me for a Halloween costume. Even my best friend dressed just like me for Halloween but I wasn't upset because it was just a costume. I know how it felt to have people dress like me for Halloween because before I was Goth I was punk. I was mad at first but I got over it and got Gothic clothes with lots of metal.
on 11/22/2005 You see people as cheerleaders, as nerds, as mummies...Who cares? "Punk rockers" need to chill out, and not be so uptight about your "way of life." If you're proud of it, then let people use it for a costume. Who knows, maybe it'll inspire them to do the real thing!
on 11/22/2005 I'm a punk. I ALSO hate it when we are impersonated by people who think that being a punk is a fashion statement, but they are going to do it anyway. I actually think it's fun to laugh at them when they make the anarchy sign wrong, or try poser hair like Good Charlotte.
on 11/22/2005 There's no such thing as "real punk". People do what they like and dress how they want. Just because someone dawns a spiked bracelet or dog collar doesn't mean they're "punk". A "true punk" (if there is such thing) doesn't really do anything for that specific title, they just stay true to themselves and pay no attention to what others think. If people want to go around and label them punks then so be it but a Halloween costume isn't disrespecting anyone. Believe me, I should know. I dress how I want and I don't care what anybody else wears. A costume isn't gonna kill anybody. Have fun...That's what it's all about in the end.
on 11/22/2005 I'm a sort of punk. Not fully, because my parents will nag and nag. But I'm as punk as I can be. I don't hang out with other punks. Anyway, if you want to make this your Halloween outfit, go ahead but be careful not to insult anyone. Oh yeah, and don't forget the black nail polish.
on 11/22/2005 Well, there's more to punk than eccentric, rebellious outfits. There is a whole music genre and movement behind it (whether the movement is expressing who you are, or fighting the power). Perhaps, if you want to be a punk, you should listen to some bands like NoFx, Black Flag, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, MxPx, and Minor Threat. Broaden your music horizon.-Landry Anne
on 11/22/2005 um well its tricky. people can be what they want to be and everyone is different, me and my freaky friends tend to wear what we want but sometimes we dress up as cheerleaders or punks or hippies etc..... its not disrespectful to another persons way of life, it is just a commercialised stereotype. if you really are punks then surely you shouldnt give a damn about what people think. plus, why were you looking up punk costumes in the first place if you dont mind me asking??
on 11/22/2005 Punk is a way of life and I think it's great. It has been ruined a bit throughout time because now people think they're "punk" if they wear the right clothes and jewelry. Punk is the attitude too, not just what you look like on the outside. When I read the directions of how to dress like a punk for halloween I thought that they were kinda dumb, but so be it. If I saw one of my "trendy" friends dressed like a punk for halloween I would think it would be funny. It's just for halloween but it can be disrespect too if the person is doing it to make fun of punk, so chill guys. It can go both ways.
on 11/22/2005 Anarchy and apathy- the motto of punk, so why do you care? That's against punk ethics. Be whatever you want to be, and whats really cool, is if you can get into a punk show or get a friend to go or whatever and buy one of the local band's shirts, for probably $4-6, it's really cheap, and actually real. So you know.... just whatever.
on 11/22/2005 well being a fireman is a job, being a punker is a way of life. and it hurts me too when people dress up like punkers for halloween. being a punker is a way of life and a way of feeling and believing. so no matter what you say it is offensive.
on 11/22/2005 To all you punks out there who think its offensive to dress up as a punk u guys need to calm down. Dressing as a fireman isn't offensive to firemen, why should dressing as a punk be offensive to punks?
on 11/22/2005 I don't know why so many "real punks" are upset about this. The whole idea of a costume is to pretend to be someone or something you're not. It's just for fun. If one of my yuppie friends dressed as a punk, I would think it was funny. And if one of my punk friends dressed as a yuppie or a ditzy cheerleader, that would be funny, too. Not everyone dresses up to disrespect something. Personally, I choose most of my costumes based on what I would like to wear but don't have the guts or whatever most of the time. That's a tribute, not disrespect. Chill out.
