Comments on How to Grow Black-Eyed Susan Vine (Thunbergia Alata)

  • Marlene Wessel Apr 01, 2010
I was driving down a main street in our town and saw this beautiful vine that someone planted next to a telephone pole. It looked like a huge bouquet about 6 feet from the ground - it was gorgeous. I'm buying one this year for the fence between my neighbor's yard and mine. Such a beauty. Thanks for the article. 5*

I live in Northern Ohio. I grew this plant last year and it grew like crazy. I loved it. But it doesn't seem to be coming back this year so I'm going to purchase another one....I can't go without this plant!

This has been my first experience with Black Eyed Susan Vine. I love the cheerful plants and have them in pots. I am in Northwest Georgia. Will these plants survive the winter and return ... how should I handle them over the winter months? Thank you.

I've found one of these specimens growing in my garden, I uprooted it and planted it in a pot with a support trellis...will it grow?

My thunbergia is healthy, but has many unproductive pods,i.e., ones that are never going to yield flowers. I've found them empty, and picked them off. Does the plant need more food to make it bloom more? It is thriving otherwise.

What's wrong with my plant? The leaves yellow quickly and fall off, of course. I'm trying not to water it too much. Does it need fertilizer? Help! Thanks...J

Plant 6-8 seedlings in a 12"-14" pot with an inverted tomato cage to provide support. Rotate regularly to balance out growth pattern, and they will fill the cage completely to form a conical "tree".

It is a great plant to put in pots on your deck. I have mine with morning glories (they need about the same amount of water). I attached the one inch mesh screen to my privacy fence and they climb up that just fine (this is the same black-mesh-netting that they sell to keep deer and other animals off plants).

Wear gloves when trimming this plant. I have developed a very strong allergic reaction to the sap of the vine. My right eye and right side of my face is completely swollen!
