on 5/30/2007 Great article - I think training a new puppy is so much harder than raising kids! But one rule does apply well to both endeavors - consistency is key!
on 5/22/2007 Don't hit your dog if it's not co-operating with your instructions. Like it or not your pet does not speak human language. It's a marvel that they can learn as much as they do. It's all a matter of repetition and some small food treat helps get started. Use words and hand signals at the same time. Eventually your pet will respond to either voice commands or hand signals. Doing silent commands to your dog is the neatest experience you can have. Respect your pet and love it. If you can't manage to do that then please don't get a pet. If someone can't spend time with the animal during the day then expect you will have problems. Dogs are social animals, they need interaction. They also need exercise just like people. Get a dog and walk it at least three times a day and you can probably knock 10 points off your blood pressure.
on 2/1/2007 Wow this article was so useless... I can't believe anyone would even bothering to write something so basic a five year old could have figured out.
on 8/8/2006 A quick snap of the leash and collar commonly called a correction is not choking a dog. Dogs respond to positive AND negative stimilus.. This has been proven time and time again by the likes of Pavlov and B.F. Skinner to name a few.
on 8/8/2006 My dog is easily excited and never comes when I call. Then I learned a good tip. What you do is;Tie your dog to a rope that is about 20 feet long. Let your dog roam the full length. Then you say 'Come' and pull the rope. Not too hard, you don't want to hurt the dog. As it is coming to you, keep repeating the word 'come'. It doesn't take long for them to get the idea.
