2 juanpa: download software called Everest. It will help you discover hardware id's installed in your computer and give you direct links to download latest drivers.

In the formatting section-I have 1 disk partition and it will not let me delete it.(delete is grayed out)this prevents me to proceed to step 5 and beyond. Any help?

I did as said but never made it to step 5. Can you please tell me what this means "Set up did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk related hardware configuration is correct. This may require running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or set up program. Set up cannot continue." Help!

Found an old computer in the alley. Brought it home, loaded up the hard drive as a slave and scarfed up some of the 64M memory sticks. Followed your formatting instructions to a tee, and they were excellent. Thank you. My dinosaur has now been updated to a woolly mammoth! Thank you!

Very good article. I love the detail and time you put into it. If I didn't already know how to do this I would definitely be using your eHow.

But can we do this while the HD is mounted through a USB to IDE adapter? I need to format the HD and install windows xp before I put it back into the correct machine. I cannot access it on the other machine, the drive was corrupt and unreadable.
