on 11/22/2005 We use paper towels layered over newspaper as bedding until our peeps are about a week or so old. The paper towels give them better traction than newspaper. It's also easy to roll them up, toss and replace each day. We wait to add pine shavings until the chicks are old enough to know the difference between food and bedding.

on 11/22/2005 When the chicks are finished eating, take their food and water dish outside. Let your chicks run around for a bit. Watch out for cats, and other things, that could attack the chicks.

on 11/22/2005 I always use a small chicken coop for the chicks to play in. It's important that your chicks have space for the following: sleep, play, running and day chores. This way you can keep them busy. Young chicks should be held in your hand for 5-10 minutes every day. By doing this, the chicks will know that you're taking care of them.

on 11/22/2005 I use about a teaspoon of sugar to a quart of water when I first put them down. You also need to check chicks' bottoms. If they get clogged up on their behinds, you need to take a warm cloth and gently clean them off. When I finish this, I rub Vaseline on them to keep manure from sticking on them so easily.
