on 2/17/2007 Mix honey and lemon juice together, taking 1 or 2 teaspoons at a time just like you would with cough syrup. It helps to ease a sore throat temporarily, and if you are lucky it will help with your cough in return.

on 9/21/2006 Peel and cut ginger into nickle-size pieces, add water and boil. Drink the liquid while hot. It works!

on 8/13/2006 After a cold with phlegm and fever symptoms, you end up with a persistent hacking dry cough. By encapsulating powdered slippery elm bark in "0" or "00" gelatin capsules, you make about 100 capsules.

You start by drinking reverse osmosis purified water with 5 capsules. The powder breaks loose into your system and attaches to the stomach mucus. You are coughing to release the mucus.

If you cough after 30 minutes of the 1st dosage. You eat 5 more capsules with water. And 30 minutes later, you take another 5 capsule dose. Slippery elm is not toxic.

There are Thayer's wild cherry slippery elm throat lozenges. They will accomplish the same effect for children or adults.
I prefer to buy the herb is bulk 1 lb. units. However, the price of slippery elm has been steadily going up.

on 7/3/2006 Try putting a fresh garlic clove between your cheek and gum. Just let the clove sit there - don't bite it. It will work all night if you don't swallow it. Also, it keeps others from reinfecting you.

on 1/19/2006 A simple cough remedy:
Take an Asian pear or an apple, and cut it in half. Cut out the seeds and fill the space with a tablespoon of honey or a pinch of rock sugar. Cook the fruit in a pot with 1-2 cups water. When soft you can eat the fruit and drink the fluid. For yellow phlegm leave the peel on, for white phlegm cut the peel off. If the cough is at it's worst in the morning make it then, if worse in the evening (or trouble sleeping) eat before bedtime. The worst thing that can happen is a healthy snack.

on 11/22/2005 MucinexDM contains 30mg of dextromethorphan which has 3 times more of regular cough DM and 600 mg of guaifenesin. I couldn't sleep at night for 3 days and switched to MucinexDM, which saved my breath and helped me to sleep and function in daytime. The medicine is designed for extended-release, and it really does work.

on 11/22/2005 I have been coughing all weekend. I came to eHow.com late at night so I could found out how to get some shut eye. If you lick your finger and put a little salt on it, then put the salt on the back of your tongue, it helps suppress your cough. It's the first time in 72 hours that I can breathe! Try it, you have nothing to lose.

on 11/22/2005 A little thing I tried recently while I was sick was taking a jar (or any other container, preferably glass, that can hold about a glass and a half of liquids) and fill it with hot water. Add a tea bag in it, whichever you prefer, and add about a 1/3 tsp. of "Vicks Vaporub" and stir it until the it dissolves. Cover the corners of the jar with your hands and lean in close and breathe in deep through your nose. It doesn't smell the greatest, but after a few inhalations, you'll feel a bit better and a bit more clear!

on 11/22/2005 I heard from my great aunt in southern Tennessee that they always used a big tablespoon of dill pickle juice to ease a cough. I only had sweet and at the time "was desperate." I had tried over-the-counter and Rx cough meds. GEEZ ... it worked! :)
