Return to article: How to Avoid Overpacking
on 11/22/2005 Put your clothes/toiletries/miscellaneous in a ziplock or garbage bag. In a ziplock bag, squeeze out the air. For a garbage bag, close off the top of the bag except for a small space. In the space put a vacuum hose to suck out excess air!
on 11/22/2005 put little things like stocking and scarves inside your shoes.
on 11/22/2005 Ensure you take good pair of low black or brown pumps that you can wear with a pant set or pant suit. Netural color pumps such as brown or black goes different clothes.
on 11/22/2005 This may seem obvious, but if you're going to be staying with friends or family, remember you can always wash your clothes and wear them again!
on 11/22/2005 One way to make room for souvenirs is not to wear your bulkier clothes on the plane and instead pack them. When you return, wear your bulkier clothes and now you have that extra room for those great mementos.
on 11/22/2005 Never take more than you can carry yourself for a few blocks. This forces you to pack light and makes it much easier to get to the last gate in the airport without checking luggage. Women, you never have to depend on someone else to handle your bags.
on 11/22/2005 Pack light by a day or two and then make up the difference while on the road by buying clothing locally. Great souvenirs!
on 11/22/2005 I use a toiletry bag with a hanger and several zippered compartments. The hanger makes it easy to access items in small bathrooms. I use the bag regularly at home to store all my toilletries. When I travel, I just grab the bag and go.
on 11/22/2005 I hang a plastic shoe holder (that you hang on doors) in the bathroom of my hotel room or cabin and put my toiletries and makeup in the compartments. It's really handy to have eveything there when you get ready in the morning!
on 11/22/2005 Stick to basic colors that do not easily stain, like black, gray and navy blue.
on 11/22/2005 When you return from each trip, no matter how short, evaluate what never even left your suitcase. ... I'm sure you will see a trend. So next time, leave those things at home!
on 11/22/2005 First off, pack light. Easier said than done I know but it can be done. Roll your clothes into neat little balls and you will save space and reduce wrinkles. It works!!!
on 11/22/2005 Every suitcase, no matter how many wheels it may have, sooner or later must be picked up. Whether to load in the trunk or carry up steps. If you have trouble picking it up before you leave home, it's too heavy to take.
on 11/22/2005 This won't work for every trip but on a five-week trip to South America I took along my older clothes. I left them in hotel rooms as we traveled. At a jungle camp, the staff had a basket with a sign asking for any clothes you were finished with.
on 11/22/2005 Keep a list of the items you need for travel on your computer. When it comes time to pack, you can access the list and are less likely to forget things. You can even keep lists for any frequent regular trips to make the packing easier.
