Return to article: How to Practice Pickup Basketball Etiquette
on 10/13/2008 Yeah every court has its own ettiquete. I found a site that has a review section for the pickup games at each basketball court in the US. Its http://nofouls.com you have to sign up to see them which is free but kind of annoying.
on 1/26/2008 Thx a bunch guys over there at eHow!!! My manners have really improved! I got beat up the first time I tried these, but after I started calling fouls (and technical fouls. lol. ;)) they started to like me! My new pals say my on-the-field roundball manners is off the charts. Just be sure to where all of your safety equipment, be a good sport, have fun, and make life-long B-Ball buds!!!
on 11/27/2006 Pickup basketball has tons of a-holes to watch out for. DO NOT entertain their hostility! this blog has several good pickup basketball pointers: http://joemael.blogspot.com/2006/08/chump.html
on 8/8/2006 If you have a situation where two guys just cannot agree on the call, suggest that one of them do or die for the ball. Often, the blowhard will eagerly agree--since he has an inflated view of his abilities. And just as often, he'll miss from out there. If he makes it, c'est la vie--the basketball gods have spoken. Even then, he may make it, get the ball, and then turn it over. And in any case, at least you get back to the game.
on 8/8/2006 If you got someone, call it. Or ask him "Did I get you?" Pick-up games reveal the character in a guy. Show moral leadership by being a good sport. You never know what you're going to get in a pick-up game. Some guys are out of control. Other guys are good people. Show respect to one and all, but if someone is being a jerk, do not line up with him.
on 2/16/2006 Go to the same court regularly (same day, same time) and then figure out when people usually start coming and show up early. You can get a lot more playing time as well as get to know people, especially if you are new.
on 11/22/2005 If you sweat a lot more than the average person, don't play. Or if you really want to, just play the point that you don't make any physical contact with some.
on 11/22/2005 Don't be a poor sport, and have fun. It is really important to be encouraging toward your teammates and opponents. For example, say things like "Nice shot," and "Nice try."
on 11/22/2005 Unless you get hit or pushed to the ground, don't call a foul. Calling a foul in pick-up games can often lead to fights and you risk not being asked to play with them again.
on 11/22/2005 Do the little things: box out on rebounds, play good defense and pass to the open man. Scoring may get oohs and ah's from the crowd, but new teammates will appreciate your unselfishness and may pick you again, even if it's just so they can shoot more!

on 11/22/2005 Don't call a "bailout" foul just because you missed your shot.
on 11/22/2005 Don't ball hog!
on 11/22/2005 If you begin to make calls around people you don't know, they tend to look at you as a whiner. If something is obvious and no one else calls it, maybe you should be playing with better competition.
