Return to article: How to Tell if an Egg Is Hard-Boiled
on 8/18/2008 After hard boiling eggs, I write a "B" on the top and put them back in the egg container in the refrigerator.
on 7/30/2006 Put the egg on a spoon and remove it from the water. If the water evaporates from the outer shell fairly quickly, it's done.
on 4/3/2006 Just shake it. If it rattles, it's raw. If it's silent and still, it's solid.
on 3/16/2006 Use this method if you're not worried about potentially shattered yolks! The boiled egg feels heavier and nothing will move inside when shaken, but with raw, you will feel it sloshing on the sides of the shell.
on 2/8/2006 Try to roll the egg end over end (lengthwise). The egg will not make even a half of a rotation if it is not boiled. It will just rotate a quarter turn or so. A boiled egg will roll end over end. Stand the egg on one end and support it using your index finger. Use your index finger to initiate the rolling motion of the egg.
on 11/22/2005 If you can pick up the egg with a pair of chopsticks, then the egg is hard boiled.
on 11/22/2005 Add as many eggs as you are boiling and put about 1 inch of water above the eggs. Bring to a boil. Boil about 7 min. Then take a spoon and pick one egg out of the water and hold up and count to 10. If the egg is hard, the moisture will completely dry off.
on 11/22/2005 Start in cold water. Boil 15 to 20 minutes. Immediately run cold water till cooled. This pulls egg from membrane and will always be able to peel easily!
on 11/22/2005 Crack it open!
on 11/22/2005 The shell is much whiter on an egg that is hard-boiled. I can simply look at the eggs if they are mixed together and tell which are hard-boiled.
on 11/22/2005 Carl's tip is good, but subjective. Objective method: Spin the egg and then give it another good twist to double the velocity. Gently press top of egg with finger for less than 1 sec. to stop shell, then release. If it doesn't resume spinning, it's HB.
on 11/22/2005 Put as many eggs as you need in a saucepan. Cover with at least 1" cold water. Put on high heat until boiling; simmer 1 minute.Remove from heat, cover, and allow to sit in the water undisturbed for 25 minutes. Run cold water over eggs 'til cool.
on 11/22/2005 If, when you spin the eggs to see which one is hard-boiled, spin the eggs harderas to spin them quickly. The hard-boiled eggs will stand up and the uncooked eggs will not. This is a more definite way to tell which is hard-cooked.
on 11/22/2005 Toss the outer skin of an onion into the boiling water or beet peel, or red onion skin. Just a small amount will tint your hard-cooked eggs. If you use a handful, they'll be colourful for Easter eggs.
