I sell kilts made by a man where it is family tradition. There is much more to kilts than just this article. The kilt spoken of here sounds like a casual kilt (the belt buckle) and not the easier to wear Victorian style. Most people wear their kilts with t shirts or dress shirts, boots (combat or lace ups) and hose or tall socks. As for undergarments, going regimental (as it's called) was for front line shock troops in the military so that when at the latrine, they were able to rush to the front without tripping or wasting time. It is only proper to go "regimental" when under these regulations or situations. Trust me, wearing a true wool kilt in anything but cool to cold weather is asking for chafing or a great deal of sweaty discomfort. SO if anyone asks "What is under your kilt?" Always answer " My boots." It's our answer :) This was a great article for the beginner.

When I was a boy we were given girls bottle green or navy blue school knickers to wear under our kilts mainlt because boys under wear was always white and the girls knickers came in colours that tended to blend in with the colours of the kilt.

What would be the point of freeing yourself from idiotic bifurcated clothing better suited to a woman or surfboard-rider (pants and shorts) and then putting on underwear? If you are wearing the Kilt, and you've still got your knickers on, (and you're not otherwise in some kind of extremely cold weather condition) perhaps its the knickers that appeal to you, and showing a bit kind of helps you...go. Know what I mean, eh? *nudge *nudge* *nod* *nod* *wink* *wink*

According to British uniform regulations during public parades or at social events where dancing was expected troopers were expected to wear undergarments.

Don't get yourself tied in knots about the proper way to wear a kilt. It is simply another item of clothing. My brother's favorite way to wear his kilt is with his rugby shirt, rugby socks and big work boots.

Don't put to much store by people who say you must go without underwear. If you want to wear the kilt and are uncomfortable setting forth with nothing underneath, wear something. As long as you feel comfortable what does it matter what others say. However if you do wear something try to have something that is a dark color or a color that matches the main color of your kilt.

My understanding of the "going-commando" issue is that only in battle or purely male company would our ancestors have worn a kilt without any undergarment. But in the presence of ladies, a true Scots gentleman would alway wear underwear. It's up to you, but I'm sure your auld aunties at a wedding don't have any desire to see your "tackle" as much as you don't want her too! So, you decide what a true Scotsman would do.

In Scotland kilts are not mainly reserved for weddings, funerals and special events! The kilt is worn as an everyday garment my most kilt wearers and mainly informally.

The top of the kilt should rest on your waist (not your hips and certainly no higher). When you kneel, the bottom of the kilt should lightly touch the ground - if it wrinkles or ruffles, it needs taken up. If it doesn't reach you're wearing a miniskirt!

The kilt is most often worn as an everyday garment in Scotland, either casually or informally. 90% of the kilt wearers I know go regimental (and I belong to a kilted community). The kilt looks at it's best when the wearer is comfortable and confident in it. Just make sure you look smart!

Don't pin the front and back aprons (top and bottom) together. This will result in a torn kilt. Kilt pins are for decoration only these days. It may not hang naturally if it is too heavy. Be sure to choose one with a secure clasp if you're dancing.

Don't call it an English kilt as is ehow have (above) if you are visiting Scotland or one may be taking a trip to the local hospital.

A kilt should strike just above the knee, any longer and it brushes the back of the knee when you walk.
