on 10/27/2007 The author is incorrect about cuffed pants being more formal. In fact, cuffed pants are less formal. This is because when men first started wearing trousers, a cuff would need to be worn to keep pants out of the mud. If you were wealthy enough to not have to walk through the mud (e.g. you had a carriage) you did not need cuffs on your pants.

Look at a tuxedo: They NEVER have cuffed pants.

on 8/8/2006 I sell Men's Suits at Dillalrds in Houston, TXI

I have been married for 35 years. I don't tell my wife how to buy a dress. She doesn't tell me how to buy a suit.

Your lady knows how to buy a dress, or a lady's suit. She probably does't have a clue about men's clothing, but she thinks she does, and will try to inifluence your decision, if you let her.

Seek out the help of the sales person who looks like he actually knows how to dress, and knows how to make you look good, with the proper fit, color, fabric, and accessories. Far too many men buy what their lady tells them to buy. They usually leave the store lookiing like it too. Take the suit home, without alterations. The store will certainly allow you to do that. Tell her that this is the suit you bought. The Suit YOU like, and unless she throws a fit, keep it, take it in for alterations after she has seen it.

If you are in Sales, You wear a suit on most of your sales calls. If you are any good, you can certainly sell your wife. Otherwise just send your lady to the store with your size, and let her pick everything. You'll look like all the other whipped guys in the world with the Pink Shirt, Pink Tie, and poor fit.

Come on in. We've got your size, and we'll make you look like you were born in your suit.

on 7/30/2006 Be careful with the pleated pants if you are larger. The pleats should not open. They are not there to give you extra room.

on 3/20/2006 With a two-button suit, only button the top button. With a three button suit, you have a choice: you can button only the middle button, which to my eye is very slimming, or you can button the top two buttons.

There are no other acceptable configurations. Never button the bottom button on any suit and you shouldn't button just the top button on a three-button suit.

on 11/22/2005 Although some might tell you that not every man looks good in a double-breasted jacket, they aren't really telling you the truth. In fact, double-breasted suits offer several advantages to men with difficult builds. For short men, the diagonal lapel line emphasizes length, and for those of us who are a little large, the characteristically broad shoulders draw the eye upward and minimize the waistline.

on 11/22/2005 It's always a good idea to get 2 pairs of pants with each suit, not just one. Your pants will wear out much more quickly than your suit coat will. Most days, I wear my suit into the office, but hang up the coat for most of the day. It's the pants that take a beating, especially around the knees and seat. With 2 pairs, you won't have to worry about that shiny worn look and you'll have insurance in case of a stain, tear or zipper break. You won't have to go without wearing your suit.

on 11/22/2005 Find a good tailor. You will look three times better in a $200 suit with $70 worth of alterations than in a $400 suit that does not fit properly.

on 11/22/2005 Go for the two-button, single-breasted suit if this is your first suit. While the three-button is very trendy, it is not always appropriate and will probably be out of style soon. The two-button is an essential basic for a suit wardrobe.
