on 6/30/2006 If I wanted to debug a database problem, I'd ask a database programmer. If I wanted to learn Spanish, I'd ask someone who speaks Spanish and English to help me. If I wanted to stay sober, I'd ask those who have had demonstrably the best success without peer - I'd ask AA. Any bird can fly, but only eagles rule the sky.

on 12/28/2005 I know this is about outpatient programs, but a little correction is in order. Rational Recovery is not a 12 step based program. Far from it. Also worth mentioning are Moderation Management and S.O.S.
Although the "12 step industrial complex" has hold of most outpatient centers, there are programs out there for those who cannot buy into the precepts of AA. Check with your local United Way, area agency on alcohol/ drug abuse. The Internet itself is a great resource, and don't forget your family doctor.

on 11/22/2005 Send the person all kinds of information via the postal service. Call as many places as you can find and have them send all their information on alcoholism. The person may toss out everything or leave it sitting around until (if ever the day comes) they want help. All this information to treatment centers, basic alcohol information, phone numbers, and AA brochures will be right at their fingertips. I have personally done this several times.
